Applications

Notch filters are useful in situations where selected frequencies must be attenuated while passing others. Notch filters can be designed with broad or narrow notches. The TNF400 series provide an extremely narrow notch. The TNF400 notch filters are commonly used for:
1. Extending dynamic range for close in intermodulation measurements.
2. Suppressing either the video or audio carrier in a TV signal without disturbing the other carrier.
3. Notching components of a complex signal that require that the impedance at the notch remains close to 50 ohms.
4. Notching a frequency very close to the frequencies that must be passed.

Although a small unit physically, the TNF400 offers notch performance of substantially larger cavity type or helical resonator filters. An additional benefit of the TNF400 is the fact that the notch is easily tuneable.

Description

The TNF400 series of notch filters are of the absorptive variety. This means that power not passed by the filter is absorbed in the filter rather than being reflected back to the source.

The TNF400 is contained in a heavy-duty nickel plated brass enclosure providing excellent shielding. Stainless steel hardware and nickel plating prevent corrosion from dissimilar metal action.

Two adjustments are provided. The first adjustment is FREQ. This tunes the notch filter to the desired notch frequency in the Tune Range. The second adjustment, PEAK, peaks the depth of the notch. This adjustment can also be used to narrow the notch width (at the sacrifice of some depth). Both of these adjustments are multi-turn trimmers for convenient tuning.

The markers are at 0.7% of the center frequency of the notch. The limit lines are at 3.0 dB loss over the specified insertion loss.

Quality

To insure that high quality is maintained each unit is thoroughly inspected both mechanically and electrically. Critical components are 100% inspected and tested before assembly into the units. All parameters are tested using the latest in advanced ATE. The unit is then subjected to shock, vibration and temperature extremes; after which it is retested to insure compliance.
